We completed this butterfly garden in 2018 and it includes a raised vegetable garden and several sustainable drainage features. The drainage was necessary because of the 2 story home built on a small zero lot line backyard, which is common in several neighborhoods in Delray Beach and South Florida. The owner wanted to attract several butterflies and we included a Hercules’-club or Zanthoxylum clava-herculis to attract the Giant Swallowtail butterfly. We included several native pollinator plants like Tickseed or Coreopsis spp., our state wildflower. The Tickseed plants were placed in a small rain garden at the base of a gutter downspout as some species like flooding conditions. The permaculture aspect allowed us to use a gray flagstone pathway to 3 separate raised beds. A small wooden trellis was built in 1 raised bed to grow tomato plants. The other beds contained Eggplant, Garlic chives, and small lettuces. Because of the relative closeness of each of the houses, we also included 2 different french drains, to keep water from causing damage to the garden and foundation of the house.
